Virtual healthcare is defined as the process of delivering real-time medical care via mobile device or phone.
During these unprecedented times, physicians and paramedical practitioners in British Columbia are able to provide care to patients over a secure (video) call via computer, tablet or smartphone.
The benefits of virtual healthcare include:
• speaking with your doctor from the convenience and safety of your own home
• mitigating the risk of virus transmission
• flexible schedule and improved access for retirees with disabilities and mobility challenges.
Telehealth virtual care with your physician is covered under MSP. Contact your family physician, who knows your medical history, for routine appointments or advice for acute or chronic conditions that require treatment or medication. If needed, your physician will provide in-person care or refer you to a specialist. Call your doctor’s office just as you normally would and the office staff will book the appointment and guide you in preparing for the telephone call or video conference.
A number of virtual paramedical services are covered under your UBC RSB Extended Health Plan. Contact Sun Life at 1-800-661-7334 or 1-800-361-6212 to get a full list of virtual paramedical services covered under your plan. After you have satisfied the annual deductible, UBC RSB Extended Health Plan covers up to 80% of the cost of services of some paramedical practitioners. There is a maximum annual cost specified for each discipline.
Access Virtual is another virtual care option available to BC residents covered by MSP.
