An annual flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and others from influenza, especially when combined with physical distancing, handwashing and staying home when you’re feeling sick. This year, flu shots are particularly important because symptoms of the flu can resemble some symptoms of COVID-19.
There are several options available to you to get the flu shot in your vicinity. Note that UBC will not be hosting community flu clinics this year. The best way to find a flu clinic nearest you is the ImmunizeBC website.
How do I get a flu shot this year?
Many doctor’s offices, pharmacies and public health clinics are providing flu vaccines this year and are taking special precautions in light of COVID-19 infection control guidelines. This might include scheduling your flu shot in advance, rather than dropping in and lining up.
If you are working or living at the UBC Point Grey campus, here are your options for getting a flu shot:
- One of the pharmacies on campus: University Pharmacy, Shopper’s Drug Mart – University Blvd, Save-on Foods Pharmacy, Shopper’s Drug Mart – Wesbrook Village, PharmaChoice – Wesbrook Village
- Through your department: Departments may be able to arrange on-site flu clinics with one of the pharmacies on campus. Contact the pharmacy for pricing and information about arranging an on-site flu clinic at your department.
- University Pharmacy – Contact Mario at universitypharmacy@telus.net
- Shopper’s Drug Mart – Contact Ryan at asdm2247@shoppersdrugmart.ca
Can I get a free flu shot?
Speak with your vaccine provider about your eligibility for a free flu shot. Some people who might be eligible for a free flu shot are:
- Pregnant women
- People aged 65 and older
- Indigenous people
- People with medical conditions like heart or lung disorders (i.e. asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), kidney or liver disease, or weakened immune systems.
- Household contacts of people at higher risk (like the categories listed above)
- Household contacts or caregivers of children under age 5
- People who visit or work in hospitals, health care facilities, or long-term care homes
For a complete list, visit HealthLinkBC.
If you do not qualify for a free flu shot, you may be able to get reimbursed through your extended health benefits. UBC faculty and staff who are enrolled in the UBC Extended Health Plan are eligible for up to $300 per year in vaccine coverage.
Should I get a flu shot?
Flu shots are recommended for everyone living in Canada over the age of 6 months, with some rare exceptions. Speak to your doctor if you’re unsure if you should get the flu shot. Flu vaccination is especially important for people who are at higher risk for serious complications from the influenza virus (including young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with certain medical conditions) and those who come into close contact with people who are higher risk.
