Leadership framework

UBC is committed to the ongoing development of leaders at every level of the organization. By uniting under a common philosophy and framework, everyone can take part in building the shared vision for leadership at UBC – a vision that holds us accountable to our strategic commitments and organizational values and enables us to embrace the complexity of our times.

UBC leadership framework

The leadership framework identifies four levels of leadership along with a set of six cross cutting competencies and related behaviour statements. The competencies and behaviours were arrived at through a careful mapping of the skills, knowledge and attitudes expected of senior administrative leaders at UBC. They were further validated through internal consultations and a review of other leadership frameworks and competency models in Higher Education.

Informed by Catalyst #2: I can grow my career, and Catalyst #4: I am inspired by diverse leaders who live UBC’s values of Focus on People 2025; the leadership framework provides transparency for employees at all levels and will – over time – permeate all aspects of talent management and development ensuring we attract, retain, advance and develop inspiring and diverse leaders.

UBC leadership philosophy

UBC’s leadership philosophy articulates a set of aspirational commitments that we can hold ourselves and each other accountable to.

Across UBC, leadership is a shared responsibility where we live the vision and values that lead to excellence in teaching, research, learning and engagement for a better world.

  • We learn from the past and consider future generations in planning and decision-making.
  • We catalyze creativity and new approaches through respectful and courageous dialogue.
  • We develop others and ourselves through lifelong learning.
  • We create diverse, inclusive, equitable and thriving environments for all.

Leadership competencies defined

UBC's six leadership competencies inspire ongoing development and refinement of desired leadership behaviours relevant to all leaders, regardless of their functional role. Institutionally, the competencies help build shared accountability for every leader's role in Shaping UBC's Next Century. Leaders are invited to deepen their capabilities through self-reflection, feedback, and conversation while encouraging others to do the same.

Getting started

Because leadership is a shared responsibility, it is up to all of us to explore the significance behind each of the competencies.

  • Consider how your knowledge and behaviours align with the competencies and behaviours at your leadership level.
  • Host candid conversations with your teams and explore ideas for making the leadership behaviours a collective commitment.
  • Meet with your direct reports to share the new material and encourage them to reflect on their strengths and areas of opportunity.
  • Begin integrating the competency framework into your performance development and management processes and take time to authentically celebrate and acknowledge people for their effort and commitment to leadership excellence at UBC.

Leadership competency development plan

The leadership competency development plan (CDP) is intended to complement your portfolio’s existing performance development and review process. The CDP tool allows for a reflective and forward-thinking planning process and is designed to be a shared document co-created through conversations between a direct report and a manager.
